Around Korakas and Korakovouni
A delightful loop around the peaks of Korakas and Korakovouni, packing into just a few kilometers a mix of easy and technical trails—right on the doorstep of Holargos. An ideal choice for riders making the transition from dirt roads to trails, or for a quick afternoon training session.
INTRODUCTION
The northern part of Mount Hymettus is its greenest, having been spared from most of the wildfires that devastated other sections. Here lies Korakovouni, one of the “siblings” of Ymittos’ famous Evzonas peak, with an elevation of 728 m, and just east of it the smaller Korakas. Both are lush and rocky, with slopes that host a labyrinth of trails—some marked, others not—many of which are perfectly suited for mountain biking.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION
This loop can serve as an “introductory ride” to mountain biking, particularly for riders transitioning from dirt roads to trails, or simply as a quick afternoon workout for those living nearby. The route circles around the peaks of Korakas and Korakovouni on the northeastern foothills of Hymettus, just a stone’s throw from Holargos.
Starting at the end of Karaoli & Dimitriou Street in Holargos, the route climbs first onto the hill of Korakas, then descends southwest on scenic trails toward Papagou. After another short climb up to the Papagou cemetery, it follows downhill trails all the way back to the finish. The dirt roads are relatively rough with many embedded rocks, while the trails are rideable and “fast,” with only a few technical challenges that won’t trouble most riders.
